Totally heart warming

South Africa legalises gay marriage.

The SA Defence minister said this in the house before the bill was passed:

Today, as we reap the fruits of democracy, it is only right that they must be afforded similar space in the sunshine of our democracy. This country cannot afford to continue to be a prisoner of the backward, timeworn prejudices that have no basis.

The lawmakers remember how they were discriminated and how it feels to be discriminated.

You’d think someone tormented wouldn’t do the same to others but it’s never like that. Seniors rag freshers even though they hated it when they were put through it. Mothersinlaw mistreat their daughtersinlaw even though they know how it felt like. And many other on a much bigger scale.

So.

Really great what South Africa has done.

Photo retouching

The touching up involved in making the perfect billboard model:

The video is part of a marketing campaign by Dove which sort of backfired.

It is extremely difficult for anyone to change the “perception of beauty” because aesthetically pleasing will always remain so. Give or take a few curves.
However, Dove’s campaign to “celebrate the curves and imperfections of real women and inspire them to have the confidence to show them off with pride” is really quite nice of them.

I keep posting videos, just out of curiosity, does anyone out there still use dial-up to connect to the Internet?

Being hip

November 21, 2006

I started to write about the early 90’s east coast-west coast rivalry to enlighten some people I know, who had no clue about it. While I was *ahem* researching, I came across this very touching writing by Lonnae O’Neal Parker.

I really like hip hop and it’s sad that most people don’t know it wasn’t just about bling, eminem and gangsta wars. Even that is not bad to listen to but after a point all the swearing and explicitness turns you off.

Hip hop started in the 70’s and grew parallely along with the black power movement and influenced much like how Dylan did with his music a generation ago. But, in the late nineties and early 2000, these traces are obscured by the foul mouthing Hip-Hop bad boys.

There are other sounds though. Try listening to Kanye West, as Lonnae says, he blends commercial with commentary and does it really well.

For the coast rivalry see this wikipedia article. Even if I’d written about that I’d have borrowed from here anyway.

I feel sad. I feel sad for Lonnae O’Neal Parker. I feel sad for Tibet.

The masthead generator

November 13, 2006

I got me a new masthead. Infact, I will be changing mastheads quite regularly because I found this.

I enter a keyword and the search shows up photos from Flickr tagged with that keyword. I then select any picture I fancy and make it my blog’s masthead. The condition is that I attribute the image to it’s owner. Which I will do because I’m not evil. You can see the owner of the curent masthead on the bottom right.

Check out Dooce’s mastheads. She makes a new one every month. And they’re all pretty and funny.

Trackbacking

November 9, 2006

Was wondering how Trackbacking works for a bit now. Found the wordpress Howto here and now I’m trackback enabled.

Whatever.

Expect a few random trackbacks from me you and you. That is, if blogger allows them.

WiiWii

November 7, 2006

Blogs can’t get more niche-er than this.

WiiWii, apart from being the best name for a blog ever, is dedicated to the Nintendo Wii gaming console. What caught my eye was this post. Specifically, this huge technicolor tattoo of nintendo creatures.

Women know your limits

November 4, 2006

Interesting how one line can get all kinda people riled up. My take on that keeps changing, but it is damn annoying when men people are trolls and leave 150 lines of meaningless trollishness.

Anyhoo, don’t want to start that all over again here. Found this reee-ally funny video. It’s by Harry Enfield.

And now lads and gents, I know my limits. *sandeep, restrained and did not put smiley here*

Nashville

November 1, 2006

Roald Dahl and Ogden Nash are two of my most favourite writers in the world. They write subtly funny and laugh out loud funny equally well.

Ogden Nash also writes cute 🙂

Dressing up gadgets

October 31, 2006

ipod accessories take dressing up gadgets to whole new levels.
Check out my google reader share page where I’ve shared some of the zany ipod add ons that I got from just a couple of gadget blogs.

Apparently, the ipod accessory market is about $300 million. Which is smaller than, say, the porn industry but way bigger than the market for frog spawn.

My ipod is naked and uncovered and does not have killer speakers to go with it. I’m sure it will kill me and run away to the home for underprivileged ipods.
